Everything you need to know, plus a whole lot more!
Stock Photography is big these days and despite the doom-and-gloom
there is serious money being paid every day for the right images.
So it's no surprise that more and more photographers are taking to the internet
looking for new outlets for their work, unfortunately most never really have a
chance.
For better or worse, there are plenty of stock photography portals willing
to take on work from new photographers -- no questions asked -- and most
photographers will find a 'stock library' somewhere that will accept their work,
whether it's 'commerical' or not.
Representation alone doesn't guarantee sales though.
In fact, the wrong representation can almost guarantee you don't
make sales and worse, it can damage your business for years to come.
Setting up a stock presence requires a serious investment of time,
effort and money ... just like any other business.
Just like any other business, a half-hearted attempt just to test
the waters, is rarely going to work. Dumping a few images in a stock
library "to see what happens" is destined to fail.
Just like any other business, the operator who puts in the time and
effort to research their market and then develop an exceptional product
line that their buyers want to use, will prosper every time.
Stock Photography is the business of marketing the
right images to the right buyers.
The Stock Photo Library is just one tool that you should be using.
It can be a major part of your business, but it's not enough any
more to just find a Stock Photo Library, post some photos and wait
for sales to happen.
You need to take control to make this work.
You need to actively market a viable volume of suitable images
to an appropriate customer-base in an efficient and professional
manner.
The good news for you is, most photographers won't do it, so those that
do it right can really clean up!
The vast majority are looking for an easy option, to post a few images
and make a few dollars. That's fine ... let them go to the Microsites and
make some small change.
Genuine buyers are fast losing patience with those sites anyway,
so that leaves a bigger slice of the pie for any talented photographer
who produces great work and is prepared to market it professionally.
Does that sound like you?
